Blog 3 – The Oweida Lecture by Eden Pomerance

On March 21, Martin Barron, Washington Post editor, gave The Oweida Lecture in response to Chief White House Strategist Steve Bannon’s statement about the press having way too much voice and listen more. Baron said “The answer to that has to be no. It is the only ethical answer”.

It’s a conflict of interest if a newsroom lacks the representation of an ethnicity or lacks variety of demographics. Of course it is difficult to have a staff in a newsroom that has a good representatives this could

If the press does not give the public the news they need, then they are not doing their jobs. The news has to be true. The facts have to all be included, leaving facts out just is similar to a white lie. The facts that are left out could be ones that sway someone’s opinion or reveal something important. If the press fails to perform their mission to give real truthful news, then they betray the public.

Some of these facts could cause issues or reveal news people don’t want to know or let others know. However, that does not mean they should not be news given to the public. The people of this country have the right to know what is going on and to be able to act upon anything.

According to the Ethical Journalism Network they recommend “ the news media have well-established, publicly displayed ethics codes that journalists are required to observe“. This will build a trust between the news media and the people or the government.

It seems like the White House or Donald Trumps administration is afraid that the press will reveal news that could make them look bad. They claim that the press has become “the opposition party” because they do their job and do the research to discover secrets that the public needs to know.

It is important to discuss that the White House is trying to tell the press that they need to “shut their mouth” and just listen because that is not at all what they should be doing. Actually, the First Amendment was put together for the people and the press to keep a close eye on the government and staying quiet would betray the amendment.
