Blog 5 Class Reflection By Daniel Crawford

Coming into the new semester I did review most of the reviews on this professor and a lot of the reviews were really good. As the semester comes to an end I can honestly say that I was not disappointed a all. Ever since I was young I knew that I wanted to be a journalist writing or in the media just because I always loved writing and everything about the media. This course was very hands on and always had the students and myself thinking critically for each assignment that was due and in the class discussions.

Over the course of this class I have learned a lot, from the in class discussions to the group case studies there was may different ethical lessons which were presented and explained. The first ethical lesson which were presented and explained. The first ethical lesson that I felt was most important would be to always tell the truth when writing an important article which will be released to the public. Giving false information to the public will not only hurt the reporter who wrote the story but all the company which they worked for because they will most likely not be seen as a trust worthy source. With journalism ethics, it stands at the top as truth and accuracy for the story. Another important ethical lesson that is very important to know and always keep in mind is to always write your own story, taking someone else’s work and trying to make it seem as if it is your own work is a huge problem in the journalism industry. It is okay to take parts of information from another article or source but as a journalist we have to make sure that when using a quote or information from a different source we need to have that section cited correctly giving the person credit for what they wrote and we do not get into trouble for plagiarism.

During the semester the case study which caught my attention the most was the study discussion of privacy in rape cases. In the discussion their was a lot of different opinions on if females who are raped should be posted in the media with a photo and their name. A lot of people in the class agreed with that these women should not be exposed that way in the media because the victim will fell embarrassed and shamed of the situation. But some other student in the class had disagreed and said that these women should step forward and speak out on the incident because they will be viewed as role models to the public and other women who are victims of rape will stand up and speak out to put the men responsible behind bars and punished for their actions.

After taking this course the knowledge that  have acquired from the semester I believe that it will follow me for my future because it has impacted me to know the ethics which journalist need to know in order to succeed in my journalism career. Everything that I learned in class had all useful information that helped me complete assignments and look closely at other article to find key information which would be critical to know. I know going in to my future career that I will take the knowledge that I have recently learned to my advantage when writing article so that there is little to no error.

My reflection for this course as a whole is that, I always felt involved and the professor made it very clear what he wanted done and the instructions given were clear. So assignments were more understandable and non- confusing all the content reviewed in this section helped me understand different parts of the journalism career field and what I should be expecting for the future. I would recommend this course for students to take because the course as a whole was very useful and helps prepare the students for what they should do and not do in their career.
