- Two important ethical issues I found really important were copyright and fair use and invasion of privacy. I found these issues interesting because they deal with mistakes everyday people make but can have really huge implications. As was mentioned in class, the future is social and people today share everything. To an average American, there is nothing wrong with posting a video of yourself singing along on Facebook o our favorite song but we know otherwise. There can be serious legal implications for using someone else’s work without their permission, no matter how briefly it is used. I know this is something most people don’t understand because many times the videos and photos we share have been shared thousands of times before, seemingly, without penalty. Invasion of privacy and its four categories is another topic I feel people have a misconception about. Most people believe that they have the right to deny photographs being taken or shared of them in public places. Again, we now know that this is not true. Although it doesn’t seem right, photographers and civilians are allowed to share photos o strangers in public places as long everyone in the public space can also see the people in the photo.
- Although we’ve been over it a bunch of times, the Stephen glass case study still sticks with me the most. I think it’s because the movie we watched showed Stephen glass as a regular person who had to face the consequences of actions some people feel are minor. We’ve all fabricated stories but Stephen Glass had a responsibility to report the truth and not to entertain. I think his story is a great example of why it’s important to continuously remind yourself of what you want to get out of your career and why.
- This course will definitely impact my career. It taught me that you really have to think thoroughly think about every decision you make as a journalist. Also, I learned the importance of ethics. You need to practice ethics so you can be trusted b the public. Your reputation is your most important asset in the media.
- I found this course to be very helpful because I truly feel like I learned from the mistakes of others. I could see myself in any of the journalists discussed shoes. Also, it was extremely effective to talk about and learn from the mistakes and negative parts of media coverage, rather than focusing only on the good. I feel this course really helps you feel like you can effectively create a brand for yourself without trying to follow in the footsteps of other journalists
