Situation Definition
Jay Crawford, a former sports reporter for ESPN, talked to students about his story in how he got involved in his career, and advice for students when moving forward into careers in the communications field. The message he wanted to get across was “You Can Get There From Here” which meant that we are getting the education we need to move on and get the job that we want.
One key point from Crawford’s presentation that I took away was being able to network with other people, and build relationships in the workplace. In addition he talked about the importance of what you put on social media is permanent. Throughout his presentation he would have a picture of him with someone else to portray all of the people he has met and still has good relationships with.
Another point from Crawford’s presentation was directed toward women but everyone can relate to. He talked about how women have more access now than ever with careers in sports media. When talking about this Crawford had a “If you want it, go get it” type of attitude when giving advice for women in sports media.
Analysis
When analyzing the ethical points that Crawford talks about in his presentation I agree that it’s important to network with other people to create more job opportunities. When networking with other people for job opportunities, the difference can be what is on the person’s social media pages.
Unfortunately when people have inappropriate and unprofessional posts on social media there future could be on the line. “Many job applicants have placed themselves in vulnerable positions by placing inappropriate, unprofessional, and/or unappealing material on publicly accessible SNWs.” (Roberts, 2009) Crawford did an excellent job telling examples of his previous experiences with these ethical pieces in journalism.
Women in sports media has become popular over the recent years. Crawford used an example of Jessica Mendoza who was a former softball player, and wanted to broadcast baseball by doing color commentary. Now she is doing color commentary for ESPN”s Sunday Night Baseball every week.
It was a good example because it shows that there are plenty of opportunities for women to get involved in sports media. With hard work, preparation, and research are changing the game in the sports industry and are leading it to a great gender diversity. (Madkour, 2017)
Conclusion
By sharing his story on how he became sports journalist, and giving advice through his past experiences, I found it very interesting and helpful. His main overall message was to go for it, and you can get there from here which I will take into consideration moving forward. It was important to talk about these ethical points because it will ultimately help in the future when looking for careers in journalism. Hearing from someone who is in the sports industry, and who has had success at it, motivates me to get to where he is someday.
