Blog Number 5- “Reflection Blog”- By James Scipione

Throughout the course of this class, we have learned about many different case studies that have had major impacts on journalism and journalists alike, and a few stand out to me more than others.

The first case study that I thought taught me a lot was the one I presented on, conflict of interests.  In this case study, we learned about Sean Hannity defending Trump while claiming to be objective. The problem arises when we learn that Trump and Hannity share the same lawyer, and this is a conflict of interest.  This case study is important as it teaches us as students that being objective and not hiding anything is extremely important when you are as popular as Sean Hannity, or any journalist for that matter.

Another case study I thought was important was the one about whether or not to place rape victims names in news reports.  There were cases when people withheld the name and those who decided to post the name. I think it was important to learn and hear from both sides so that going forward, we are able to make a decision based on our own personal beliefs and morals.

I have taken a few classes over the last couple of years that I think will have an impact on me in the future, but the class on ethics in journalism might be the most important.  I liked how we talked about different scenarios in class and people could voice their own opinions on the matter. This is key because it allows you to be mindful of others, as not everyone will see the world the same.  For students looking to make a career out of reporting, this class is very important for teaching young adults how and when to report on things. For one of the guest’s speakers we were required to attend, the one given by John Eligon taught me the most.  He talked about putting yourself in uncomfortable situations and using the person’s words to tell a story, not your own. He said that is the most important concept to understand, and that piece of information stuck out to me.

I will use what I have learned this semester to be a better writer, and to treat each controversial situation differently than I would have normally done.  Ethics and morals are an important concept especially when you are reporting about the world, and we must always remember to be fair and objective.
