1: Ethical Lessons- My favorite lectures from this course were the ones where we watched the Steven Glass film and talked about all of the ethical issues surrounding what he did. It really brought to light that some journalists will do anything to keep their jobs and make stories sound interesting. Following that movie we learned that Steven wasn’t the only journalist to do this- like the news reporter that sped up the videos of the boats on the lake. I learned that it doesn’t matter what form of journalism it is, there will always be someone to do something unethical.I was also really intrigued to learn the harm some of these journalists caused with their fabricated stories. It’s peculiar to me that these journalists never stopped and asked themselves, ” who will my fake story affect? Who will it harm? What are the future consequences of my actions?” when they were committing these ethical violations.
2: Case Study-I’m going to be biased and a bit conceded because I think the case study my group presented on- Naming the Victim: The Bowman Butterflied Case- was the most interesting thing I learned about and worked on all year. The media turned Patricia Bowman’s life into a circus after they released personal information about her and information that was irrelevant to the case in order to make some money. I was impressed with how group worked together in completing the project.
3: Future Impact- This course will make me think twice before doing anything that could possible be seen as unethical. I learned a lot from this class that will influence me everyday. I’ve already seen changes in the was that I do things for my internship. I knew before this class that my actions and decisions impacted the people around me, but now I have a greater understanding on just how some people’s choices impact others. I hope to carry all that I’ve learned with me in my career and in my personal life as well.
4: Reflection- I’m going to be very honest here. I really enjoyed the classes when I attended them and really wish I had made it to more of them on time. 10:30 a.m. is an early start for me. I think the class was structured really well and Bu, you made the course material relatable and interesting to learn about. I think we all had a good time. We shared good laughs, took good pictures and learned a lot. Without a doubt would take this class again. Bu, don’t forget to follow me back on Instagram!
