Blog 1 – This I Believe… by McKinley Roche

I believe in equality. My mom is black and my dad is white and I’ve grown up in a world that’s struggling to bridge the gap between the two races that make me who I am. I’ve grown up in a world where I’ve witnessed and been taught about the history of deep rooted issues my two halves can’t seem to resolve. The year my father and mother were born, my existence would have been frowned upon and their marriage would have been illegal. Every day I hear about racial injustice and every day there is a new story about people being discriminated against because of the color of their skin.

Growing up I’ve always struggled with my identity as being mixed race. It’s kind of strange trying to identify with two opposite groups of people with two completely different cultures. I wasn’t white enough to hangout with my white friends without them telling everyone that I was “the black friend,” but I also wasn’t black enough to hang out with the black girls and be able to exactly relate what they have gone through as black people in society.

I’m still lost on who I am and I still struggle with my identity. I don’t look white, but I also don’t look black, so where in the world do I fit in? I feel like I need to hold my tongue on issues pertaining to racial inequality because I’ve never experienced it and don’t want to overstep boundaries. But the older I’ve gotten I’ve realized I’m not going to let anyone penalize me for doing what’s right.

I believe in equality in all forms. Wether it’s racial, gender, sexual or religious — everyone has the right to live a life without fear of being discriminated against. It’s as simple as The Golden Rule. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. That’s it!

Think about it… Do you know how much better this world would be if people just minded their business and kept their hate to themselves? Maybe you don’t agree with someones lifestyle or you have a negative view of someone because of their skin color. But isn’t it way less tiring to just smile and be kind instead of spewing hate?

We’re all human beings, and when it comes down to it — we’re all we have on this earth. The world would be a much more beautiful and peaceful place if we all just saw each other as human beings and treated one another with the compassion and respect we would show those close to us.
