Blog 1 – This I Believe… by Ariel Simpson

Whether I am in a different city, different state, across the country or at Penn State, I remember my roots. I remember my family. I remember waking up and eating Pop Tarts while waiting at the bus stop. I remember my Pop Pop’s warm hugs. I remember all the love and support my family provided. I definitely remember the struggles they went through to put me where I am today.

A lot of people I know say they strive for perfection. Little do they know, it is the imperfections that make us who we are. Nothing can be perfect. Let me repeat, NOTHING can be perfect.

I wasn’t raised in the greatest neighborhood. Where I’m from, no one was really promised college. I never even thought of it as an option until my family pushed me to work hard in school. They taught me that money wasn’t the solution to everything.

Making the move to Penn State was a culture shock for sure. Nothing was the same as my high school. While meeting new people can be very fun, you have to stay true to yourself and remember where you come from.

There has never been a moment where I have been ashamed of where I’m from. Everything leading up to now has made me who I am and brought me to Penn State, which is a pretty good accomplishment I must say. I am the second in my family to attend college, the first being my brother who is a year older, so he beat me to it.

I knew one girl in the past who was ashamed of where she came from, and the funny thing was, her dad was a doctor. She had a pretty cozy house and lifestyle, if you know what I mean. Yet, she was ashamed of this.

No matter what background you come from, never be ashamed. Whether you come from a wealthy family or a poor family, own that. There are sacrifices being made everyday so that you can be where you are now. Whether you are in a different city, different state, across the country or just at Penn State, stay humble and remember where you come from. I know I will.
