Part 1 Situation:
The Story of Stephen Glass is about a former journalist for the New Republic from 1995-1998 and it talks about he life and how he finally got caught in he unethical ways. Glass publish 41 amazing stories while he was with the New Republic, but however fictionalized 27 of them. Stephan glass was finally discover by a Forbes magazine in 1998 after publishing his article “Hack Heaven” which was about a hacker meet up that ended up actually never happening or existing.
When the movie about his life was released he was shown through the actor planning with him how strategically and mental idea that were going through his head when being pressure by the Forbes magazine such as the wrongdoing of miss leading there reader with made up stories and lied to extreme extents about the stories more then once.
Part 2 Analysis:
Stephan Glass was lying during most of his career with the New Republic and after finally being caught all his colleagues saw a different side of him. One person that has said something about Stephan Glass was Hanna Rosin where her comments on Glass were “Steve was my colleague and very good friend, maybe something like a little brother” But then after he was release she was so surprise that she could believe that he had a dark side to him.
His fabricated articles put a huge effect on the New republic and other magazines that used his stories. After they years Stephan Glass finally live up to the damage in did to those business by apologizing and repaying them as much as they can.
One magazine that he repaid was Harper’s magazine and what he did was sign a check for 10,000 dollars for them. Glass also wrote a letter explain his action by saying “I want to make right that part of my many transgressions.” Glass also said that he wasn’t gonna stop there he was gonna try to do what he could to free his conscious.
Even though Glass was trying to make right people thought it was just a plan to get his liability back and to make things right with the companies who were hurt by his articles.
Part 3 Conclusion:
My final analysis on him is that even though he tried to redeem himself he can not take back what he did. He fabricated work are still published it know that it wasn’t true. The facts are that Stephen Glass shouldn’t have fabricated his work in the first place and not try to become popular and do a interesting story every chance he got.
I learned that with work you need to be truthful in journalism and fabricating work to make a more interesting stories are not worth your job and career. Also, that not ever story a journalist makes has to be completely entertaining there are stories that will come pass a journalist desk and may not be as interesting as most of there articles but it is better to write about something that is truthful rather then make believed.
