During this semester, the two most important ethical lessons I learned in COMM 409 were minimizing harm and acting independently. In a class lecture about the right to privacy, it was clear to see how challenging the job of a journalist can be when balancing an individual’s right to privacy and the public’s right to information. Although obtaining consent from sources and looking at them with empathy often interferes with a journalist’s primary duty to report the news to the public truthfully and accurately, I learned that this process was necessary in order for journalists to respect all who will be featured in the news coverage, especially those who are not public figures and who therefore, have a greater control over their privacy. My group’s case study about The Patriot News withholding names of sexual assault victims during the Jerry Sandusky scandal illustrated an example of sensitive sources whose privacy should be respected. Journalists in this study placed themselves in the shoes of these victims and made the right and responsible decision to not publish harmful words and photos. This action reminded me that compassion always comes first in these situations and that it is important not to cross over certain boundaries that would inflict harm to others when writing a story. In addition to knowing now that journalists have to make tough privacy decisions at the cost of their own benefits, I also learned that journalists are required to act independently by avoiding conflicts of interest and refusing gifts and favors from other parties that can potentially damage the credibility of their reporting. In order to remain ethical to their obligation in reporting the truth, journalists have to separate outside interests from professional loyalties and remain neutral to topics they are covering in order to write an accurate report. I have come to realize how hard this is for journalists to stay impartial when reporting on a topic they feel strongly for or against, which happens quite often in political debates. As seen in a lot of examples throughout the semester, if personal gain such as monetary rewards were involved, this will not only reflect poorly on the unethical journalist, but will also jeopardize the trust between an organization and the public.
The case study on Stephen Glass impressed me the most because of how relatable the story is to college students, especially those who are about to enter the workforce. Glass’s story will forever be engrained in my mind as will its message, which infers that there are no shortcuts to attaining success and in earning the approval of others. Due to his continuous mistakes of lying to his colleagues and to the public, Glass faced the dire consequences of not being truthful, honest, and respectful to others. His fabricated stories ultimately did not only cost him his reputation and career, but also ruined the image and trustworthiness of The New Republic. It furthered impressed me because this study brought about the theme of decision-making, which was displayed in various discussions throughout the semester. Glass showed me that my decisions reflect on who I am as an individual and that they play a big part in establishing my credibility.
This course will impact my life and my career in many ways. As an aspiring public relations professional, I know there will be situations where I will have to make tough ethical decisions when dealing with future crises. Using the guidelines and principles provided in this course, I will weigh my options carefully before taking the best course of action that will minimize harm to my stakeholders. I will also refuse rewards and benefits from others to eliminate clouded judgment when making selfless decisions. In life, I will also apply what I have learned about ethics to maintain good relationships with the people around me. COMM 409 has taught me to put others’ needs before mine, to always speak the truth, and to be a good example for others to follow.
I am glad that I have chosen to take COMM 409 as one of my last classes for senior year. It is a great way to wrap up these four years as I go into the workforce, where ethics will definitely be evident in my everyday life. The case studies, presentations, and group work enhanced the learning experience. Dr. Z has taught me the value of learning ethics and provided me an environment to hone my communication and teamwork skills, which are appreciated in the job market.
