Tyler Stephenson – Weekly Story Idea #6

The focus of my story for this week will be the recent traffic developments on Park Ave./Hospital Drive and roads in Boalsburg. Local traffic safety boards approved an alteration of the current configuration of the stoplights and turning lanes. I would focus on asking commuters who take those roads often whether or not the changes are necessary. It is relevant to the area because both are heavily traveled roads, and construction could cause delays in the future. And as it presently stands, more accidents have occurred since the roads were last changed in 2011.

I think the best people to tell this story would be daily commuters, PENN DOT workers, and accident survivors from these spots if they would be willing to comment. It would be interesting to hear if everyone agreed on the changes or if people will be upset by possible construction delays or even re-routing on their daily commutes. The PENN DOT workers could provide insight into the expected construction and possible delays or completion dates.

The shots I could use here are video of cars driving through those intersections during busy times of the day. I could show close-up footage of the stoplights and turning lanes. The shots could be easy to sequence. I would want footage from both sights, and make clear which is which by zooming in on the street signs and surrounding areas. I could also show a chart or graph representing the increased number of accidents since the change, and explain when the last changes occurred and what happened then.
