Celebrating Diwali in State College
For being a central Pennsylvania city, State College is a very diverse community that openly celebrates other cultures. On November 15th the Indian Community of State College will be celebrating the Festival of Lights, otherwise known as Diwali, at 6:00p.m. in the Mount Nittany Middle School Auditorium.
This story is a very colorful one considering how colorful the celebration of Diwali is. I want to emphasize how bright and exciting the event is in order to showcase it to those who may not be aware of what the celebration means or includes. I want to get a lot of close ups of people’s faces smiling and enjoying the festivities, also being sure to capture a lot of the cultural references that represent Diwali. I want to interview several members of the Indian Community of State College and ask what went into preparing this event. I would also want to interview someone who is not perhaps involved and how they are enjoying it, what they find different and interesting. Lastly I would want to interview the caterers and inquire about the traditional Indian meal being prepared for those in attendance.
There will be dancers at the event so that will be a great opportunity to capture nat sound and good b-roll. I want to get plenty of shots of the food in order to display how it is prepared and served and how people are enjoying it. I would like to really emphasize the colors in this piece so I would do that by getting as much as many colorful shots as I can. It is also being held at a middle school which leads me to believe there will be a lot of children in attendance, and by using b-roll of children it just makes the package that much more engaging.
I lastly would want to emphasize that Diwali is also occurring on the opposite side of the planet in India and would ask members of the Indian Community of State College if they have any relatives that are celebrating Diwali in India and what types of festivities they are having in addition to how it inspired what they put together in State College.
I believe that by showcasing the diversity of culture in State College it could be a really great device to show other members of the community this rich cultural tradition, as well as encourage them to take part themselves.
