Weekly Story Idea 2

This week I chose a story on Centre Daily Times about Penn State administering flu shots for the season.

Axel (focus): Penn State is aiming to encourage more students to get flu shots before peak flu season hits.

Riders (people): The best people to tell the story would be University Health Services and students who are for flu shots and those who are against flu shots.

Spokes (details): The details of the story would be the percentage of students and people in general who are hit by the flu every year. It would also be interesting to discuss how many people get the shot vs. how many people don’t, and why students are choosing not to (or choosing to).

Rim (structure):

  • Beginning: The segment would open up with a scene of a nurse preparing a needle and administering it to someone. The camera would capture the filling of the needle, the nurse/health services worker, the injection and the person receiving the needle’s reaction (the viewer would also be able to hear them talking at the beginning). Then the reporter would do a voice over introducing Penn State’s flu shot initiative. The scene would then switch to the reporter who would talk about the initiative.
  • Middle: After the reporter completed her intro, she would then interview the nurse/health services worker. The nurse would discuss why Penn State is trying to get students to get the shots and how they are going about it. Then the scene would end and it would go back to reporter who would share a quick statistic about the number of people who become infected with the flu every year. She would say something about the why students chose to/or choose not to vaccinate themselves.
  • End: In the end, the reporter would interview both a student who chooses to get the vaccination (and why) and a student who chooses not to (and why). After that segment, the scene would go back to the reporter standing in front of University Health Services. It would close would with the reporter telling students how the can get the shot, should they choose to.
