Race is a tremendously hard topic to talk about. A lot of people are uncomfortable with talking about it because of society. Society determines what is right and what is wrong, and speaking on racial issues are looked upon negatively by many. Here at Penn State, race is somewhat of a major issue. PSU is a predominately white school, and the black community is extremely small. In the hub, we have a place called the “PRCC” or Paul Robeson Cultural Center. In this center is where the black community hangs and out plans event. It is also a place of comfort. Minorities go into the PRCC and know its a no judgement zone.
The minorities at Penn State are also in full support of other schools going through racial issues. After hearing about the racial issues at the school in Missouri, a student here at PSU created a hashtag #PSUsupportsMissou to get the word out and spread awareness on what is going on. We take racial issues very serious. We do not push the issue, we simply spread the word. The students that attend University Park are very supportive and welcoming. We have a great platform in the hub where many student feel comfortable speaking their mind.
The next step for us here at Penn State is to become more united as one. We do things like THON to help raise awareness for pediatric cancer, but its also a way to unite Penn State as a whole. The goal is not to divide us, but to help blend us and make everyone here at PSU in feel more at home. Were doing a great job of feeling like were family, but we have a long way to go. We will continue to raise awareness in any way that we can.
