Reflection on Comm 465

At first i didn’t know what i was getting myself into when i signed up for a tv production class all i knew was that I had to take it in order to graduate. On the first day of class i had many mixed emotions about this course and the primary one was how in the hell was i going to get all of this work done when i never touched a camera or edited film a day in my life. But as the class progressed i started to gain a passion for production and learning how the business operates.

I liked the fact that we worked in groups this whole semester because no one individual can become great without having a great team around him. You ever heard of the phrase “Team Work Makes the Dream Work”, well i found out the true meaning of that saying this semester. Working with others help you see different angles that you might not recognized when working on your own. It also makes you develop people skills with having to be able to communicate with your group partners so y’all could finish the assignment. My groups members and i had time conflicting schedules this whole semester but still found a way to communicate with each other so that at least two of us were available at the time of recording or editing.

By all means this class was very helpful with teaching me many different techniques on how to become a professional journalist or tv news anchor but one of the hardest things to master was the anchor standup. I had to do at least 20 takes every time i shot a standup, for some reason i couldn’t remember one of the lines in the script causing me to have to redo the whole thing. And when it started getting cold and we had to do our standup outside you could forget about it lol i had to be there for at least 30 min trying to master it. But I’m glad that i went through that experience because it just made me more focus and helped me work more efficient under critical conditions.

I’m thankful for this class because the skills i learned here i will be able to take with me and apply them to whatever else i do with communications for the rest of my life. I’m not exactly sure what my journey is or where i will end up but i do know that i will have some experience under my belt from how much this course has taught me. From being professional, to creating catchy news stories, to learning how to create my own website where i could display examples of my work. I’m glad i got to meet you as well as having you as an teacher Dr. Bu Zhong.
