Photography as a Reflection of Self – Jasmine Lomax

One of my first photographs:

Who: No one (a bridge)

Where: The Big Bridge, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

When: August 8, 2011

Why: This is a photo of what is known as the “Big Bridge” or the “Jaws” bridge in Martha’s Vineyard. I took a photograph of the bridge because I was really into taking pictures of scenery at the time, and I thought that the bridge would create a great photo.

When I first saw the bridge, I saw people jumping off of the bridge, despite the “No jumping or diving from bridge sign.” I’m absolutely terrified of heights, but I am somewhat of an adrenaline junkie. So I decided to jump off of the bridge too. I was horrified, but eventually, I faced my fear. This photo is important to me, because it reminds that I can move past my fears. Now when my mother says, “If your friend jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?” I can say, “I already did!”

A more recent photograph:

Who: My puppy, Caramel

Where: My home (Maryland)

When: May 24, 2017

Why: I took this photo, because I’m obsessed with my puppy. She is a one-year-old teacup Yorkie that has brought so much joy into my family’s and my lives. Also, I think that she is super photogenic.

This photograph is important to me, because of the feeling that it brings when I look at it. It reminds me of my immediate family, and they mean the world to me. I think the image reminds me of them, because the photo was taken at our house and the dog is ours. I like this photo, because it reminds me to always look forward and never look back.

Final thoughts:

I think that what I have realized is that personal photography is not necessarily about what is in the photograph but instead about the emotion that a photograph evokes. Both of these images are simple, but it is the feeling behind them that make them special to me. I definitely want to start taking more photos to capture more feelings and memories.
