Hurricane Maria, which has rapidly developed into a category 5 hurricane as of 8 p.m., is projected to strike Caribbean islands this week with disastrous effects. Hurricane Jose is expected to impact areas of the U.S. coast between Delaware and New England. Research from the National Hurricane Center is included.

The Axle: The purpose of this story is to inform Centre County residents of the impacts of the two hurricanes and learn how these storms and Hurricanes Irma and Harvey are affecting students directly and indirectly.
The Riders: I would first interview a meteorologist to learn about the impacts of the two current hurricanes and what Centre County residents can do if Hurricane Maria strikes or impacts the U.S. I would also interview the state climatologist to learn if there has been a correlation between climate change and the number of hurricanes. Next, I would interview students and locals to learn about how all four hurricanes have been affecting them and their loved ones, especially since Hurricane Maria was announced as a tropical storm on Saturday and hurricane yesterday. Because of this, I would ask if residents are doing anything to prepare for this storm.
The Spokes: I would get natsot by recording sounds of wind blowing and rain falling. I would also show forecast cones from different models, such as the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model and the Global Forecast System model, and satellite images.
The Rim:
- Beginning – To begin, I would mention Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and their impacts before talking about the two current hurricanes, Jose and Maria. I would include my natsot during this part. While talking about the current hurricanes, I should show different maps and models, explaining what each means.
- Middle – During this middle, I would include interviews with Penn State meteorologists and the Pennsylvania climatologist. Next, I would include interviews with Penn State students and locals.
- End – I would end standing on the roof of Walker building, which has different weather equipment. The top of Walker building offers a good view of the sky, so I would include a shot of the sky as well. I would close by summarizing what is going on with Hurricanes Jose and Maria and how the hurricanes are impacting Centre County residents. Finally I give viewers tips on what to do if Hurricane Maria hits or impacts the U.S.
