Blog 6- Lauren Smith

Project 4 was my favorite one to do! All though I had some issues come up with what I was originally going to film and other personal issues, I was able to find a new topic to film and create a great package.

I chose to do it on the closing of The Rathskeller, a famous restaurant in downtown State College that has been there for 85 years. At first I thought it would be kinda hard to film inside the restaurant, but I went at a time when it wasn’t crowded and was able to walk around the place and get good shots.

The Rathskeller has effected people in many ways. Some people have amazing memories there and many people are sad to see it go. With it being such a historic place and the news of it closing causing a lot of problems, I thought it would be a good topic to do for my project 4. Before it closes I was able to get some good shots of the place.

Unfortunately the owner was not there at the time I was filming so I could not do an interview with him. But thankfully, I was able to interview a waiter who has worked there for years and he gave me some really good audio of the place and the owner. Two Penn State students were there for lunch and were happy to do interviews with me too.

I enjoyed doing this project on my own because I was able to chose a topic I wanted, how I wanted to film it and chose my time to do it. I also liked editing. When I was editing project 4 I used effects I hadn’t used on previous projects. I also got more shots and more audio then previous projects so it was easier for me to edit. I also incorporated still images into the project which is another thing I had never done before on previous projects.

One thing I would change about my project is the lighting. Since it is a restaurant that is in a basement it is kinda dark in there. The day I shot was also kinda gloomy out so that wasn’t helping. I would also maybe go at a time when more people would’ve been there so I could’ve gotten more shots of people interacting at The Skeller.
