Vanity Fair

Distributing information online is very competitive as there are so many sites providing news. When looking for a site, I usually go for a site that is visually appealing and has credible sources as well. Vanity Fair is an innovative and aesthetic site to get your news from.

Vanity Fair’s site is fairly organized as it is separated into 3 different headline topics. HIVE is any stories related to Washington, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley; HWD is any stories related to the entertainment industry such as award ceremonies, TV shows, and overall industry coverage; and VANITIES is stories that shape our cultures, such as stories on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Queen of England, and book reviews. Each of these three tabs takes you to a specific site curated for the topic. If you are unsure of what topic you want to look under, Vanity Fair also has a trending row where they insert their top stories.

While their website is organized, it is also aesthetically pleasing to look at. They provide different fonts, vibrant photos, and also have a “worldwide” section where you can select news from other countries as well. The site has its own photographer for each cover photo as well as a credible award-winning writer as well.

What’s interesting about Vanity Fair is that not only is it a news site, but it is also a magazine. The magazine contains photos and stories on popular culture, fashion, and current affairs. The price to subscribe is fairly lower than other news sites as it is $8 for a year, but you get the digital and print access, as well as a free tote bag. The Washington Post charges $29 for a year of subscription which is way higher than what Vanity Fair charges. The Washington Post’s site is also confusing as everything is one font and very close together.

I believe that this site does mainly targets women as the site has a feminine layout. I never associated Vanity Fair with politics but after reading their article on the Trump Administration, the author Bess Levin used to work for the New York Times and has many credible stories in politics. Since Vanity Fair produces a magazine a month, on the site you are able to see the complete archive of their magazines instead of going out to buy one from the store. When clicking on the magazine issue, the top stories are listed with the author and photograph taken.

Vanity Fair is easy to navigate and very futuristic. The headlines for each story are fun and eye-catching and this makes news easy to read. The future of Vanity Fair may be to dig more into ongoing topics such as doing a Coronavirus live update like the NY Times and Washington Post are doing, but in conclusion, I think this site will do well with all age groups and makes reading the news enjoyable.
