Tech Report 3-Slack by Joe Skinner
- The Background: Slack is a social media app developed for professional business use in the workplace. Especially during coronavirus, many businesses have moved to have their employees work remotely from their homes. Slack allows a company to add their employees to a channel, where employees can communicate with one another in a message feed and stay productive despite not being in the same area. Slack was released in 2013 and is typically used by working adults in order to make businesses work just as well when people are apart than when they are together in an office.
- The Analysis: The introduction of Slack for businesses made it incredibly easier for work to continue to be done or groups to communicate with each other than before its inception. The main innovations that make Slack an extremely useful tool for businesses are the channels, third-party extensions, and teams. Channels puts entire business in the same feed where everyone can send messages and communicate with each other, and can put together smaller groups if needed for special projects. Additionally, users can access all channels that they are involved in, so they can always stay up to date on everything they need to. The third-parties that are compatible with Slack help give users different items to install. Partnerships with Google Drive, Zoom, Dropbox, and Workday. By using these extensions, the business’ goal of collaboration among their workers can be more easily achieved by working together on documents or presentations in Google Drive or having meetings on Zoom. Finally, teams make it easier for workers to collaborate on the same goal by putting all of the necessary tools for them to work on in the same channel. For example, a group that is working on a presentation would be able to all be in the loop with a channel, on a shared Google Doc or Google Slides, or hosting a teleconference on Zoom. Everyone on the Slack team would be working on the most up to date files that are saved in real time.
- Conclusion: Slack has revolutionized the way business in conducted in the few years that it has been introduced. Slack allows for business to continue to be done after the office is closed and lets workers communicate with one or all of the coworkers on personalized channels. Future development for Slack could possibly lead to companies being able to work with other companies outside of the channel on collaborative projects and contracts. Slack could also have a potential educational use as an alternative to Canvas where professors could directly message their students with assignments or other files.
