Ava Williams Tech Report 3: Vero

The app I chose is called Vero. The app was founded in 2013 and launched in 2015 by Ayman Hariri. Hariri is a billionaire and also the son of the former prime minister of Lebanon. Vero can be seen similar to Instagram, except Vero allows you to select which people you want to see certain posts, versus Instagram which shows each and every post to all your followers. Vero can be used as a simple social media platform or an app for entrepreneurs to promote their products. The word “Vero” means Truth in Latin. The typical user would be the same users that use Instagram or Facebook: People who like to share content or promote a product.

Vero differs from the typical social media app as it has no advertisements and is subscription-based. One of the most useful functions that Instagram took away was how on someone’s feed, your follower’s posts would be posted in chronological order. With Vero, the app isn’t manipulated by an algorithm therefore all posts you see are in chronological order. Another feature that you can do is separate your followers into groups. For example, you create groups amongst your followers and post what you want each group to see. You can post something personal for close friends, and something business-related for clients. The two groups won’t be intermixed.

Vero is a great app for entrepreneurs as they are able to promote their product and Vero allows the post to have a “Buy Now” button which allows users to go directly to your site to purchase the product. This can cause positive traffic to your site and if Vero can verify that you are a legit company that ships products out in the timeframe stated and does not scam people, Vero will verify your account which would then allow users to find your company easier. For Instagram and Facebook, companies now have to pay money to advertise their product but Vero allows you to do that at no cost.

Overall, I believe Vero could be the new Instagram if it gets enough recognition. The feature that I think is most helpful is the fact that you are able to separate what each follower can see. This can be helpful so you have one account for your coworkers, family, friends, and clients versus having a professional account as well as a personal account. In the past year, the app has been getting more recognition but it still is not as well-known to millennials.
