“There’s No Train and No Stations: Charting a Career Path in a Trackless World” – Andrew McGill

Although the quote was not directly said by Mr. McGill, he took it under is wing and adopted it as his own.  Andrew McGill is a graduate of Penn State University that graduated in 2010 and has bounced around numerous work places to ultimately get to where he is today.  Born and raised in Pennsylvania, now residing in Washington D.C., McGill had always loved news, reporting and writing.  The ironic aspect is that he never intended/wanted to go into the field of politics, as like may others it was never appealing to him, yet the company that he now edits for, POLITICO, is a politically driven news outlet.  He now loves what he does, na dit took him a while to get here.  However, he did not get to where he is now in the cookie cutter, conventional way. The saying, “There’s No Train and No Stations: Charting a Career Path in a Trackless World”, really resonated with me for a multitude of reasons, as it does with Andrew.

When thinking about my career and what I want to do for the rest of my life, I get. very overwhelmed.  I am the kind of person that takes things on a day by day basis as I have more ability to control the outcome of what I do.  When I think of that far a head, it doesn’t work for me well.  Especially when it come to the conventional idea of a career path, one where you are on a liner path that makes stops every so often where you gain more experience from a different job.  The reason why I like this quote so much is that it doesn’t map out the traditional job path, it allows for a more open concept to the idea of a career “path”. It allows for more movement, and not just movement along a straight line to get from point A to B.  In my mind, not having to follow a path to get to where you end up getting to is a breath of fresh air after breathing dust for so long.

This is beneficial to many other than just me as I know others struggle with the idea of. mapping out their lives while in college, it is daunting beyond belief.  Knowing that your path is not a straight line, knowing that there can be curves, bumps, jumps and set backs should bring a piece of mind to whoever is in need of it.
