Depop: Communicating Through Clothing

In today’s society, connecting with one another through social media is not only prevalent for social interaction, but it also provides easy options for business transactions. Beginning as an app solely for purchasing clothing from magazines, it transformed into an interactive app that allows users to sell and purchase clothes from other users to exchange clothing among one another. Not only do users have the opportunity to share their clothing with one another, but they can also see what their friends like, save and share for the purpose of gathering their own inspiration.

With new technologies and advancing social media platforms, Depop not only provides users with opportunities for business growth, but they also have the opportunity for users to become “influencers” and accumulate a high social media following. Therefore, having a high social media following gifts users a platform for growth on other social media platforms and to increase the amount of traffic on their site in order to gain a higher number of business transactions and opportunities to collaborate with other users. By providing myriad options for users, anyone has the prospect of earning money and selling to others without having to create a personal website and earning a seller’s license.

While providing users with an unmatched opportunity to create a name for themselves and earn money in a simple way through communicating with others, Depop also has its limitations. Although users can become big-name accounts and earn a following from the app, users that are new to the app may have a hard time standing out amongst the more well-known users. However, while this is a common downfall that users experience, the app consistently provides users with opportunities to become better known.
