Grace Muratore – Weekly Story Idea 4

The Axle: I would do a story on the upcoming THON 5K and the Charity Miles fundraiser leading up to the race. Charity Miles is a way for THON organizations to raise money the week before the 5K by logging activities such as walking, running, or biking.

The Riders: The best people to tell this story would be any of the THON directors who work to put on the 5K, individuals who are participating in Charity Miles and/or the 5K, and possibly a student organization that is recording activities for Charity Miles as a group. The THON directors would be able to speak to the events leading up to the 5K and what goes in to ensuring the race is fun and successful. Student organizations and individuals participating in Charity Miles and/or the 5K will be able to detail why they got involved and could speak about their experience with Charity Miles and/or their participation on race day.

The Spokes: For this story, it is very important to include shots of the 5K race. There are many heartwarming moments that would capture the atmosphere of THON events, such as shots of children running, people starting the race or crossing the finish line, and people supporting and cheering on the runners. Additionally, sound bites of interviews with the people listed above would add personal narratives regarding THON and what the event means to them. I would do a stand-up on race day by the start or finish line with the runners and supporters in the background.

The Rim:

  1. Beginning- I would open the story with a sequence of a runner (preferably a child) getting ready for the race, tying their shoes, putting on their bib number, etc. Then, I would begin the voice over and transition into an interview with a runner or a member of a student organization.
  2. Middle- Throughout the middle of the story, I will continue showing footage of the race, taking a break here and there to include a sound bite from one of the THON directors and another runner or student organization member.
  3. End- The story would end with a memorable sound bite talking about the impact THON has on the community, and the last shot would be of young children crossing the finish line of the race.
