Malia Brown – WSI 7

The Axle:
For this week’s story idea, I want to focus on both the pros and cons of social media use within the world of college. Almost every college student uses social media in some type of way whether it’s for their own personal benefit, network, or other uses. I want to express to college students around the United States the pros they can/do get out of using social media along with the cons that come along with it too. With Penn State being the closest college in proximity, I would be conducting interviews with students from there in order to provide college students around the world with someone they can relate to and gain advice from.

The Riders:
This story applies to any student within the United States as it can provide information on how social media can help them, but also harm them. The best people to tell this story would obviously be the college students. I would like to ask them how they use social media and what good they get out of using it. I also want to ask them about the cons that come out of using it and if it acts as a major distraction to their tasks. Through these interviews, I hope to unveil the truth behind why college students use social media and what they get out of it. Furthermore, I would also want to interview the professors. There are professors that keep up with the social media tricks and there are some that do not. I want to ask these professors if they think social media is more of a helping or hurting factor in the lives of these college students. Lastly, I think it would be a good idea to interview some of the college sports coaches and the academic advisors. I think it would be a good idea to interview a sports coach and ask them how social media plays both a positive and negative role within the lives of their college athletes and how it affects their performances. With the academic advisors, I want to ask them if being active on social media is going to help a college student’s future or hurt them. I also feel like the workers of CAPS could provide information on the issues they have seen with social media in the lives of college students. These varieties of interviews can provide different opinions that one may never get from just interviewing one college student.

The Spokes:
I would most definitely include footage of students on their phones such as texting, scrolling through instagram, and maybe even just talking on their phone with a friend. I also hope to get footage of students on their laptops with emotions of them being both happy and unhappy. I think it would also be cool to get a shot of students on their phones avoiding school work or maybe just laying in bed on their phones tuning out their obligations. This will really set the tone to the audience of how big social media is in the lives of college students while also revealing the positive and negative moods it has on the students. I would include SOT footage of the college students, professors, sports coaches, academic advisors and CAPS members. Through this, I hope to get a variety of opinions of the effect social media has on college students and if it is doing more harm within their lives or helping them. I would also include footage of the dorms, sports facilities, HUB, classrooms, and just other places on campus. I would also include natural sounds of students communicating and possibly even sounds of a college student scrolling on social media such as TikTok.

The Rim:

  • Beginning: In the beginning, I would include quick cuts of college students utilizing social media in different ways at different spots on campus. This will really allow the audience to get a feel of how much college students use social media and how much of a big part it is within their lives. I would also include statistical data on how almost the entire population of college students uses some sort of social media. Providing this data will only add to the case of how much it can really affect a students future, current mood, academic performance, and life as a whole.
  • Middle: The middle of the pkg will be filled with the bulk of the SOT footage. These interviews will be from the college students, the professors, the sports coaches, the academic advisor and the CAPS members. These interviews will allow the audience to really see how social media is affecting students in both a positive way and negative way.
  • End: In the end, I want to provide an overview of the biggest positives and negatives that come along with social media use. I hope to maybe even provide another SOT interview within this section with advice on how college students should handle social media. This section will also include more footage of the students using their technology. I hope through this footage, college students are able to not only learn, but realize the good things that come out of them using social media and see the things they should be avoiding when using it.
