I never knew about this class and was just searching through lion path. I happened to stumble across this because I love social media and wanted to take a class that allowed me to learn social media marketing skills (without having to take an actual marketing class.) I feel that this class really gives us an edge in the world of communications. Especially with me going into broadcast journalism, a lot of the jobs now a days are handling social media content. By taking this class I feel prepared that I would be able to handle their social media appropriately and constructively. Two important skill is feel that I have learned through this course is the GNI readings, as well as how to creation a social media action plan. I feel that with the GNI readings I will be able to put that I know these skills on my resume. Just this alone will give me a boost against some competition and shows I have an analytical way of thinking especially about technology and websites. The social media action plan also as I said before helps know marketing with a specific focus on social media, obviously. By being able to effectively and constructively create a plan companies are more likely to see this as my ability to create a plan and follow through and effectively construct something that can effectively be used. Two important lessons I have learned are how to time manage and think analytically in a professional way. I thought of this course as almost a business course and not as much a communications course. This is just because although it has a touch of both it gives comm students the ability to be in a business related course. Time management is also really important with this course because we have group projects. As a broadcast journalism student I am use to having projects but they are more independent. By having group projects this hold everyone accountable for their work and almost forces you to not procrastinate because you don’t want everyone to get a bad grade because of you. I really enjoy this and I feel in college there aren’t a lot of opportunities for group projects. I see myself being an executive producer for either hard news or long form news (not to sure yet), and with this course it gets me thinking about the other ways that journalism can be used. Social media is so huge right now and is forever growing. By adapting and forcing the company you work for to adapt with the times it sets you up to succeed. Producers need to know about social media because they might have to control it or possibly tell people what they want posted. I feel that what I have learned in this class will help me do this constructively and effectively. This course was amazing and I would recommend it to any comm students or even business students.
