Bars, Partying, football games, and education is what the small town of State College, PA (also known as Happy Valley) is known for but many are not educated on the helping hand Happy Valley has to offer. Homeless daytime shelter, “Hearts for the Homeless” has been serving the homeless of State College since in 2008.
Leader of the organization, Ginny Poorman, began handing out necessities to the homeless on the streets of Pittsburgh, PA to help them bare with the cold winter of 2008 and from there the idea of “Hearts for the Homeless” took off. Ginny continued handing out clothes, food, and toiletries on a daily to the homeless of Pittsburgh. Due to positive responses, a few years later, Poorman moved “Hearts for Homeless” to a location downtown State College, located on 100 S. Fraser Street where she hoped to touch the lives of even more people here.
“Hearts for the Homeless” meets not only real physical needs but also mental needs of the homeless. Services provided at the shelter besides providing food and clothes are AA meetings, job-hunting, resuming writing skills, bible studies, community events, a place to go for relaxation during the day, and support from others in the community. Several volunteers help out at “Hearts for the Homeless” daily allowing the homeless who attend to know there is someone who cares.
“Hearts for the Homeless” has been touching the hearts of many for a couple of years and doesn’t plan to stop. Ginny Poorman hopes to establish a common living place where the less fortunate can stay to get back on their feet while learning how to maintain their own living space, job, and money. Until that time comes, “Hearts for the Homeless” plans to keep fulfilling their mission, meeting needs and loving all types of people; letting the homeless of State College know they’re not alone.
