The Axle: A new statewide program – Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week – simulates business situations for high school juniors and seniors to prepare them for the real world. I would like to convey just how beneficial it is for high school kids to get actual business experience and track the progress of students partaking in the program.
The Riders: I obviously want to focus on the students who are being given this wonderful opportunity. John Trombetta is one of the masterminds behind the program so it would be great for him to shed some light on how this all came about. Leslie Kistner is the director for Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County so she is very involved with the students from this area. It would be great to talk to her as well. I’d also talk to some parents about how valuable they believe this experience is for their children.
The Spokes: The main reason this program was created is because young adults entering the workforce had a tough time acclimating to the real world. I want a shot of the kids in their high school classes and then shots of them taking part in these business-like simulations to prove a point that you can’t teach the skills needed in the workplace. You learn with experience.
I want to also show all of the kids working in groups and document the progress they have made from day one. I would interview the kids before and after they start the program to show the strides they have made. I would interview Leslie, John and the parents as I also mentioned above and they will help tell the story. On top of that, I also want to get a shot of a young person struggling in their first job, to show the importance of this program and how great it is that high school students are getting this first-hand experience before graduating.
The Rim:
Beginning: Start off with students in the classroom and in the voice over, talk about the lack of preparation that young adults get in school and how this hurts them when they graduate. I will then show the clip of a young person overwhelmed at work and having a difficult time.
Middle: I will introduce Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week and provide some context. I will then transition into an interview with John Trombetta before introducing the kids. I’ll have them talk about what they expect to learn and get out of the experience.
End: I will show a scene of the kids enjoying themselves but also working, to show why the program is so beneficial. I will end with a powerful sound bite from a student who talks about his experience.
