Aria Moyer Weekly Story Idea 7

Axle: the focus of my story would be the American Red Cross announcing they are granting scholarships to 16 – to 24- year-old students who donate blood, in an effort to overcome the seasonal decline of blood donations. I would shoot at next months State College blood drive to bring attention to the cause, and inform people of this opportunity.

The riders: The best people to tell the story would be representatives of the American Red Cross in Centre County, and students who have previously donated blood, as well as students who haven’t and receive their feedback on what they think about the Red Cross granting scholarships in return of blood donations. I would also interview a doctor or a nurse, who could inform the audience on the importance of blood donations.

The spokes: The details I would include would be B-Roll footage of volunteers setting up the blood drive, and people donating blood. I would also include an interview with the American Red Cross representatives in Centre County about the scholarship and the reason behind this idea, as well as an interview with students on this topic and if they would try to join.

Rim: The beginning would be B-Roll of the volunteers setting up the blood drive, and handing out flyers to the public to encourage them to donate blood. I would then add VO to introduce how the American Red Cross will be granting scholarships to students to encourage blood donations, in the seasonal decline. And add graphics to show the declining percentage. The middle would be SOT of and American Red Cross representative on why they are enforcing this scholarship, what the requirements are and current feedback. I would then also interview their target audience, students, and ask them what they think about this initiative. Along with B-roll of the students signing papers and donating blood. I would also interview a student who needed a blood donation for his/ her health and provide the audience with a personal story on why blood donations can make a difference. The end: would be an interview with nurses on why blood donations are important, but also explaining how the people donating blood need to be in good health first and foremost, along with B-roll footage of students donating.
