Aria Moyer Weekly Story Idea 8

Axle: The focus of my story would be the THON 5K held Sunday November 2nd, in State College, PA as part of the annual marathon benefiting the Four Diamonds, which donates money to research pediatric cancer and  supports families whose children have been diagnosed with pediatric cancer.

The riders: The best people to tell the story would be the people running the marathon, the spectators, volunteers and organizers of the THON 5K marathon . I would also interview any pediatric cancer survivors present at the marathon, or anyone who is running to in remembrance of a loved one diagnosed with pediatric cancer. I would want to interview the people who have a personal relationship with this cause and report on why they are taking part in the marathon through a more humanized angle.

The spokes: the details I would include would be B-Roll footage of the runners running the marathon, their family and friends cheering them on. In addition, an interview with the runners on why they ran and hopefully find a personal story that relates back to the Four Diamonds fund, which is where all the money raised will be going to. I would also interview THON’s Special Events Executive Director Caroline Sheep and ask her  how many people signed up for the marathon, how much money is raised from the marathon alone and to make it more of a personal story I would ask her why THON and the THON 5K matters to her? I would then include B-Roll of the families and runners interacting, as well as volunteers setting up the race, and the race director starting off the race, with many shots of runners crossing the finish line, as well as B-Roll footage of children interacting with the runners, and SO of pediatric cancer survivors either running the marathon, or cheering friends and family on from the sideline.

Rim: The beginning would be B-Roll of the volunteers setting up the race, families arriving at the site in marathon gear, and signs, along with VO to explain what exactly the Penn State Dance Marathon is, and how the THON 5k benefits the families in the Four Diamonds fund. The middle would be SOT of the THON Special Director Caroline Sheep explaining why this race matters to her personally, and the community. Along with B-roll of the racers starting and running the marathon, and spectators. I would then focus on one runner and his/her personal story that inspired him/ her to run in the marathon focused on pediatric cancer. In addition to the runner explaining their inspiration to compete, I would also interview their family and friends at the sidelines on what this event means to them and their runner. The end: would be an interview of the runner explaining how he feels after the marathon, and b-roll of him/ her crossing the finish line and embracing their families and friends at the sidelines. I would also interview the race director to give one final feedback on how the event went and how much money was raised for the Penn State Dance Marathon.
