Yang Hong: Weekly Story Idea #8

The axle:

Part-time jobs are offered to international students (which is illegal) in State College area.

 

The riders:

Students who are doing part-time jobs off-campus in State College area, Penn State DISSA officer, Restaurants or shops owners who are offering part-time jobs to international students.

 

The pokes:

Interview with students who are doing the part-time jobs off-campus, ask them why they are doing the jobs, how many hours do they work in a week, how many credits they’re taking in college, and ask them if the jobs they doing can be related to their academic pursues.

Interview with the owners who are offering jobs to students, ask them if they know this is illegal, if they know, ask them why. Ask them the salary rates they are offering to the students, and if there’s a difference between the salaries they pay for the students and the salaries they pay for the regular employees.

Interview with the DISSA officers, let the officer explain why taking off-campus jobs is illegal for international students, ask them if they acknowledge any students are doing this, and ask for their opinions on this issue.

Data showing how many non-U.S. citizens are living in State College area, how many of them are students, and maybe how much money they’ve been spent as a total and detailed distributions into different categories.

B-rolls of students are working.

May do a crowd interview, ask random people in the area about their opinions.

 

The rim:

Beginning: Start with B-rolls of international students working off-campus, use voice over to explain what’s happening. Use SOT of the DISSA officers to establish an understanding of the issue. Use voice over and B-rolls as a transition to the next part.

Middle: Start with B-rolls of one of the student worker as the transition. Then use the SOT of the student worker, let him or her talk about a personal story. May find more than one interviewees, and try to accomplish diversity in their ethnicities. Use SOT of the owner to add another layer to the story, may use the crowd interview to add other layers.

Ending: May use a demonstrative stand-up to show what the data shows, or give the audience an idea of how much work they’re doing and how they feel about working in a “foreign” country. May wrap up with a sound bite from the DISSA officer, may ask them about what kind of solutions they may suggest.
