Finding a hairstyle that is appealing and manageable is very hard to find especially in a small college town such as State College. One brave woman is attempting to bring the big city appeal and motif to our backyard and is receiving a warm response. Candace Lyons, owner and head hairstylist of Styles by Candace is that brave woman that has relied on her large cliental base and her years of experience to make a career out of her passion.

After starting as a hair stylist in the Philadelphia area where she is from, Candace moved to the Center County area and began building a cliental base. Lyons used her extensive experiences and trade building to bring the big city experience to the small town. However, one day Lyons had a moment of clarity as to what she wants the next step in her life to be.

“Then one day, it was almost like an ‘ah ha’ moment, why am I making all this money for other salons when I can do it for myself,” said Lyons.

After Candace’s “ah ha” moment, she has taken off and not looked back. Candace feels that today’s society is all about how people want to look and how they can look better.

With the technology available to people today, Lyons talked about why professionals such as herself are necessary. “People want to look good, and you have to have the right professionalism and expertise.”

Styles by Candace offers a wide variety of hair styles that a customer can choose from when they walk into the salon. Lyons provides chemical treatments such as colorings, extensions and weaves of different lengths and colors and press and curls. However, Candace does not limit herself to chemical hair alterations. She also does natural hair changes in the forms of straightening and braiding, and any other type of hair cut that her customer’s request.

Lyons summed up her primary goal when she said, “Anything that you can get in the city, even though this is a small town, I try to bring a big city flair here in State College.”
