Ye Old Diner town favorite.
Every college town will have your traditional eateries, chain places such as McDonalds, Chipotle, etc.; but many times it is the local family own places that attract the most attention. After going around downtown State College and surveying the locals and students the results backed up this point.
Coming in Second was Baby’s burgers and shakes on Garner street in downtown State College. Baby’s is a traditional diner that attracts many, but the place with the most votes was a different diner, a little further downtown.
The place that got the most votes was Ye Old Diner on W College Ave. One of the oldest establishments in downtown. The Diner (as it is called for short) has been open since 1929, and is a 24/7 traditional diner that serves breakfast all day and night long. The old fashion look, and traditional menu that has stayed consistent over the 76 years of doing business.
One of the main attractions on that menu is know as “stickies”. Stickies are are a cinnamon bun like dessert that is served with ice-cream. Stickies are hand made everyday early in the morning. “One of the coolest things is that stickies are still hand made, and not mass produced.” said an employee of the diner. This is a huge reason why the diner sees a large number of alumni come back through the doors. Located right next to the State College Theatre, a stickie after a show sounds like the perfect topping on the night.
The Diner is very community oriented as well. On Thanksgiving they held a dinner special for 50 cents and helped to raise money for cancer which Asia the store manager says exceeded expectations.
Students can enjoy an enjoyable laid back establishment that offers wifi, and good food. Alumni and locals can enjoy a family setting. Whether you sit by yourself at the bar, or with a group the low prices and good food is a smiling attraction.
