I believe in being yourself.
For as long as I remember my dad has taught me to be myself in every situation. He would always tell me that not everyone is going to like you regardless of how you act, so just be yourself and surround yourself that you have fun with. For awhile, I didn’t quite understand what he meant by this since I was very young. However, I would soon come to realize how important of a life lesson this was.
As I got older and older I started to understand that there is no way of pleasing everybody and that changed the way I acted in many situations. People always tell me that I speak my mind very often, sometimes to a fault. I’m told I have little to no filter in what I say and have a unique set of beliefs that many would disagree with.
Although these may seem like traits people wouldn’t like to have, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even if my personality might drive some people away from me, the people that stick around and let me be myself are my best friends and we have some of the best times together. The feeling of being able to be yourself and not having to worry about the consequences is like no other. Pure enjoyment and lasting memories.
Even though some of my closest friends accept the way I am and wouldn’t have me any other way, they don’t exactly believe in my ways. They believe in changing how they act depending on the situation they are in, which I understand. If you’re in a job interview you should probably carefully select your words instead of just saying anything that comes to mind. Which is smart, but at the same time you should never lose your core values.
You shouldn’t put on an act for somebody to get what you want when you know that’s not the real you. If I was hiring somebody I would want to be able to get a feel on the person’s personality. Is this someone I can hang out with all day? Are they going to enhance the work environment? I’d be angry if somebody completely changed how they act once they got what they wanted from me.
When I was young and my dad was telling me to be myself, I never really understood the impact it would have on me. The words that I just nodded my head yes to, but really didn’t understand, would turn out to be the words that impact my life every single day. I have a lot of things to thank my dad for, but this one might just top the list. Thank you, dad, for making me the person I am today, for better or for worse.
