How Right is the QB Hype: Baker Mayfield

Cleveland Browns fans have truly proven to be troopers to even pay for tickets to go watch their team play. Until tying the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first regular season game (September 9th, 2018), they have managed to lose every single game for the entire last season and a little into the season prior to that! Cleveland drafting has been part of the problem, with the program having around a dozen poor quarterback choices between free agents and draft picks. Now the true question…is Baker Mayfield on the same path as all these other Browns decisions have been? Let’s take a look at his key college and NFL statistics.

1. He completed a very respectable amount of his passes.

For a person who had to play one season at Texas Tech just to later be noticed by the Oklahoma Sooners, it was extremely impressive to see consistently positive growth during his college years. His completion percentage was 64.1% his first and only year on record with Texas Tech, and then bolstered his abilities to an average of 70% of his passes being completed between his last two years with the Sooners. Those are the best overall percentages from rookie quarterbacks this year, putting down an argument that he could be the most accurate thrower from the 2018 NFL Draft.

2. His Touch Down Numbers.

Beautiful in every way here. Starting with only 15 (12 Passing, 3 Rushing) in his freshman year at Texas Tech, he consistently went up in his number of TD’s each college season, and ended with 48 in his senior year with the Sooner’s (43 Passing, 5 Rushing). This not only proves that he can score, but he is showing the growth that he has also become smarter in his decision making as each year of college progressed for him. You do not consistently increase this statistic, and by so much, if you were out on the field picking dandelions.

3. He never had one season in college with double digit interceptions thrown.

This is so valuable in the midst of even NFL veteran QB’s who, to this day, must find some admiration in constantly throwing the ball right into the hands of the opposing team.  His interceptions thrown from freshman to senior year literally go 9, 7, 8 and finally 6. Despite that these weren’t going consistently down per season played, that cannot be argued in any way as inconsistent, or as poor statistics in general. Furthermore, it is fair to note for all QB’s that some interceptions are also at the fault of if your receiver bobbles or tips it in the air for a pick also.

4. His QB Rating was very impressive, and consistently grew.

Consistently growing an already good QB Rating of 127.7 his freshman year, all the way up to a remarkable 198.9 his senior year, there is not much more to say in this category except…wow.

It is fair to say that we honestly need to see him some time on the field as a starting quarter back, considering the stubborn move to give the unforgiveable klutz Tyrod Taylor the start. Preaseason stats have even showed Mayfield is capable! In obvious conclusion….he is right for any QB hype.

I definitely believe that Baker will be in before the halfway point of the season. The Browns have tons of offensive tools now, and their defense is filled with young talent. Putting Baker in there will ignite the entire offense, I just wish he still had Gordon to throw to (but Jarvis is very nice, too).
