How Right is the QB Hype: Patrick Mahomes
Kansas City Chiefs fans did not have much to complain about when entering this year’s football season (2018). They had finished 12-4 in 2016, and 10-6 in 2017. Furthermore, they were able to earn playing time in post-season football…the best spot to be part of as a franchise in the NFL. However, those two seasons had a different man in the pocket. Alex Smith was in the formula of Chiefs football since the 2013 season, and had ended his place as starting quarterback for them after last year’s season (2017). With him already being traded to, and currently starting for the Washington Redskins, Patrick Mahomes has taken the reigns of quarterback for the Chiefs. Even though this is his second season in the NFL, he spent last season as a backup to Alex Smith, a polished veteran. With only 35 passes even thrown that season, the best numbers to look at clearly come from this season, as he has now earned the starting position with the Chiefs for 2018 since the start of regular season. So…let’s get into his stats and skills.
1. His Touchdown to Interception Ratio is Above Your Average QB.
Okay…in his first season in the NFL (2017) he threw for no touchdowns, and one interception. However, like I said, he only even got the chance to throw 35 passes. Now, as the starting QB this season, he has thrown 22 TDs with only 5 interceptions. That means for a little over every four TD passes he’s thrown, would equal each interception he has thrown. With that not even including drops, tips and broken plays by the wide receivers, this is a stat that really stands out.
2. He has quick and intelligent decision making in the pocket.
This is not something that is plastered on the stat boards, but it sure is one hell of a mechanism to get the good stats up on the board. I mean, simply watch this situation as an example. On top of his intelligence and decision making, he also is a mobile quarterback. He has very light, quick feet to enable him to outsmart and outrun the opposing defense. Not to mention the fact that having good passing accuracy would also help out, if he had it…
3. He DOES Have accurate passing, and good quarterback plus passer ratings!
Considering the fact he has the highest pass completion percentage and QBR in the ENTIRE NFL league for the 2018 season, things are looking just peachy for his first career starting year (to say the least!!!). His RAT (passer rating) for the year may also be number one in the league, but that statistic is not displayed on a credible website to confirm it. Nonetheless, Mahomes has thrived like no other QB I have reviewed in this category.
4. He has EXTREMLEY limited experience in regular season.
Deshaun Watson was a star for the first half of the Houston Texans 2017 regular season, while he was only a rookie at the time. However, after a torn ACL, he still is having so much trouble reliving his small period of astounding football from 2017, completely falling off the numbers and decisions he was making in 2017. Even though Mahomes is not prone to injury, Watson’s story goes to serve the point that a quarterback needs a healthy two full years starting and needs to keep up their statistics and skills while avoiding injuries like Watson had. Basically, no short lived “miracle moments.”
With all these stats and skills in mind, the current Chiefs team he is starting for is 6-1 going into Week 8 of the 2018 NFL season. The way Mahomes and the entire Chiefs team is playing, Mahomes is already a very likely MVP candidate , and one of few quarterbacks that could win a super bowl for their first time as a full-year starter in the NFL. Despite his minimal start time in the NFL, I think Patrick Mahomes is going to be something amazing for NFL history. To say, without hesitation, Mahomes is definitely right for the QB hype!
Mahomes will definitely be a star for years to come imo. His mobility and insane arm is gonna lead that Chiefs team to plenty of playoff and hopefully Super Bowl appearances (this season?) which is an exciting thing to see.
