Chinese Language Teacher Association (CLTA) – Western PA Chapter

State Level:
Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PaCIE)
The Pennsylvania The Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PaCIE) has worked to strengthen international education in the Commonwealth. Established in 1969 by a group of Pennsylvania colleges and universities in order to advocate for international education and to support collaborative projects, PaCIE has also provided important professional development and networking opportunities to college and university faculty, administrators and students. Membership was extended in 2004 to K-12 teachers and administrators involved in international education, and PaCIE actively promotes linkages between K-12 and tertiary institutions.

Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association (PSMLA)
PSMLA is the state organization of world language teachers in Pennsylvania.

National Level:

CLTA – National
CLTA is the national organization of teachers of Chinese. CLTA was established in 1062. The organization holds its annual meetings in conjunction with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in the fall, as well as organizes conferences during the year.

Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN)
CELIN was established to strengthen and expand Chinese language education in early childhood, primary grades, and immersion programs. With a focus on Chinese language education, CELIN works together with practitioners, researchers, policy makers, parents, and advocates for language learning across the United States and beyond. CELIN is an initiative of Asia Society.

The US-China Strong Foundation
A nonprofit organization that seeks to strengthen US-China relations by investing in a new generation of leaders who have the knowledge and skills to engage with China. Established in 2013 as the 100,000 Strong Foundation – and relaunched in 2016 as the US-China Strong Foundation – the organization leads a national movement to ensure the next generation of US leaders is equipped to engage effectively with China: a global strategic power, the second largest economy in the world and America’s fastest growing trade partner. One of the initiatives of the foundation is the 1 Million Strong national campaign. The campaign seeks to expand Mandarin language learning in US K-12 schools from approximately 200,000 to 1 million by 2020. Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping announced this ambitious effort in 2015.

Chinese Language and Discourse is a new journal published by John Benjamins. Many university libraries have a standing subscriptions to scholarly journals. The Heritage Language Journal (HLJ), an online, blind peer-reviewed journal, was established in 2002 to provide a forum for scholars to disseminate research and knowledge about heritage and community languages. HLJ is published by the National Heritage Language Resource Center at UCLA and appears three times a year, in April, August, and December.
