Classroom Assessment

Classroom assessment is a very different phenomenon from large-scale standardized testing. Classroom assessments are usually designed and implemented by teachers, who have a history of interacting with their particular groups of learners and who have the opportunity to continue working with these same learners over a period of time. In addition, classroom assessments are generally oriented towards supporting development of individual learners than in ranking or comparing large populations of students.

As a result of these differences, classroom assessment presents its own set of potential strengths and challenges. In this portion of our site, we offer guidelines for you to consider as you begin the process of planning assessments for your language classroom. As you will see, there are multiple options at every stage of the assessment process, which means that there are many possibilities to choose from as you identify assessments that are appropriate to your classroom context.
