R2D2 and Chewbacca, Galactic Men of Mystery

With Episode I, George Lucas attempts to answer a plethora of questions fans had from the original saga. One of these was the fact that R2D2 and C3PO seemed to have no memory of the rise of the empire, and any of the details found in the new saga. In Episode III, we learn Bail Organa orders to have the droids memories wiped, before sending them to the rebellion. Now this is an incredibly detailed and convoluted fan theory, so bear with me! R2D2 and Chewbacca are secretly rebel agents.

First off, does it make sense to wipe these droids memory? I mean they just witnessed the rise of the Galactic Empire firsthand. Their intel could be precious in forming the rebellion. The theory goes that R2D2 asks to have his memory spared, while C3PO has memory wiped immediately. So, during the 20 years between Episode III and IV the two robots travel undercover, C3PO still not knowing they are affiliated with the rebel cause. However, R2 has been in communication with the Rebel Alliance throughout that time.

R2 convinces him C3PO to get in the escape pod, and seeks out Obi-Wan with a higher goal. R2 is purposefully captured by the Jawas, seeking a ride to Obi-Wan’s, but they will only take them as far Skywalker Ranch. Then R2 escapes, and finds Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan refers to him as “my little friend,” but then later says, “I don’t seem to remember ever owning any droid,” which is a signal to R2 to not tell Luke about anything prior to the galactic civil war. At this point, R2 contacts his fellow spy Chewbacca for a ride.

How does Chewie fit into this whole thing? Well, in Revenge of the Sith we learn that he is good friends with Yoda, and is second in command of the Wookie army. So why would this great warrior be hanging out with scum like Han Solo? Yoda needs Chewie to be his eyes and ears.

Additionally, Chewbacca convinces Han to work with Jabba the Hutt. This way Chewbacca can visit Tatooine frequently, with a valid reason, and keep tabs on Luke Skywalker. For all we know, Han is just a pilot and Chewbacca is running the whole smuggling operation. So when he received a transmission from R2 to meet at Mos Eisley, he made a “mistake” forcing Han to dump is smuggled cargo and dock in Tatooine, where our heroes meet and the plot takes off.

Two major characters die in Episode IV, Bail Organa and Obi-Wan. These are the only characters from the prequels that truly know the family tree of Darth Vader, Luke, and Leia. However, if the theory holds true, then two other will know of the bloodline, R2 and Chewbacca.

While there are few and far details that prove this theory, it is fun to think of the adventures of the sidekicks. Adding to the narratives of lesser known characters allows fans to dive deeper into the world of Star Wars.

  1. As a Star Wars lover, this has become my new favorite blog. This is a very interesting theory, and it’s quite believable, and if it’s true, those are some badass droids.
