I enjoyed talking to Marco Silva from Sao Paulo, Brazil. We talked about the differences between Puerto Rico and Brazil. Sao Paulo is the capital of Brazil and the largest city of the southern hemisphere. Puerto Rico is 3,508 square miles in area, Puerto Rico is a combination of islands, and the main island — the largest and with the most significant territorial extension — carries the name that refers to the conglomeration. This is also the case with islands that are adjacent to the main island of Puerto Rico, such as Vieques, Culebra, Mona, and Caja de Muertos. Puerto Rico can approximately fit 27 times inside of Sao Paulo. Compared to the 95,834 square miles in area in Sao Paulo.
The weather difference is the winter in Brazil, Paulistas wear well-bundled jackets light coats with temperatures ranging from 55 to 75 degrees F. In the summer months, the weather is similar to the weather in Puerto Rico. Temperatures ranging from 68 to 75 degrees F. Puerto Rico is an island and has a different climate compared to Sao Paulo. Puerto Rico is a tropical island, therefore, it feels like summer all year round. In Puerto Rico, the average temperature high of 89°F and during the summer and a low of 70°F.

Brazil’s World Cup winners celebrate with the trophy in 1994.
Football is Brazil’s most beloved sport, with almost everyone having an affiliation to a national team to at least some degree. Brazil has produced some of the best and most talented football players ever in the history of football, such as Pele, Didi, Neymar, and Ronaldinho. Having been the only national team to have ever won five FIFA World Cup titles has ranked Brazil as one of the leading nations in football. Brazil has hosted the World Cup two different times in 1950 and 2014. And there are not just football fans in Brazil; from a young age, football is a hobby for Brazilians and it is the most played sport in the country, for both men and women.
Puerto Rico participating in the World Baseball Classic.
Puerto Ricans that have climbed through the ranks of baseball’s minor leagues and made it into the MLB (Major League Baseball) are treated as national icons. Puerto Rico currently has the fourth-most active players in Major League Baseball (MLB) among Latin American jurisdictions, behind the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Cuba. More than two hundred players from the archipelago have played in the major leagues since 1942.
The Carnival is arguably the world’s biggest party. The Carnival in Sao Paulo is similar to the one in Rio with the main competition held at a Sambadrome. The parades feature samba schools that are associates of the Independent Sao Paulo Samba School League or LIGASP. 13 samba schools vie for the prestigious top position at the Anhembi Sambadrome every year. The Carnival attracts some 1.5 million tourists from Brazil and abroad. Many attend the “bloco” street parties, while 72,000 can fit into the Sambodromo parade stadium.
I remeber watching the FIFA world cup in Rio. I think my entire family was huddled around the TV screen watching the different matches. I really want to visit some time and maybe even go to carnival.
I really like how you discussed the differences between the two cultures pertaining to sports, Brazil seems to revolve around soccer and the world cup, while Puerto Rico really is invested in the MLB and athletes who make it to that level from Puerto Rico.
