What type of person enjoys watching 18 seasons worth of a show that is known by its fans to be emotionally taxing? Well, I enjoyed watching all 18 seasons, and I cannot wait for season 19 to be released. Regardless of the amount of time I spent crying over the different plot lines, I certainly love watching this show. Airing on Thursday evenings, Grey’s Anatomy has climbed to the top of the TV ratings since it first aired back in 2005. Before I breakdown the show, talk about my favorite parts of it, and explain why you should watch it, I will advise you to prepare yourself with a box of tissues at the ready for every time a character dies.
The hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy follows the life story of main character Dr. Meredith Grey, played by actress Ellen Pompeo, as a first-year surgery intern at Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle, Washington, and her fellow interns as they embark on a journey to become surgeons. Meredith meets her best friends in this first year of residency: Dr. Christina Yang, Dr. Alex Karev, Dr. Izzie Stevens, and Dr. George O’Malley. In addition to following their professional lives, the show also heavily prioritizes the characters’ personal and romantic lives as well. Grey’s Anatomy pleases viewers in many ways, but the main way would be the amount of romance in the show. For example, Meredith falls for her superior Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), the attending Neurosurgeon, who receives the nickname McDreamy. Over the course of the 18 Seasons, Meredith has many other love interests, but McDreamy stole her heart and married her. And how can one forget about the number of main character deaths in the show. Every heart-wrenching goodbye fans exchange with characters keep them coming back for more seasons. Fans fall in love with the characters quickly in Grey’s Anatomy. But, when the actor for that character chooses to leave Photo Source the show, their character will, most likely, die in the show leaving the viewers to mourn the loss.
Labeled one of the most progressive shows on air, Grey’s Anatomy tackles many current issues facing society. Grey’s Anatomy wrote out a character from the show because he made homophobic remarks to another cast member who was a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Many characters in this show also illuminates the struggle of addiction, whether it be drugs in Dr. Amelia Shepherd’s case or alcohol in Dr. Richard Webber’s circumstance. In season 6, the creator of the show, Shonda Rhimes, took it upon herself to emphasize the need for gun control laws in the United States. To do this, she had a deceased patient’s husband return to the hospital with a gun and kill many people working in the hospital. Season 14 highlights the issue of domestic abuse between Dr. Jo Wilson and her husband Paul Stadler. Jo had moved away from her husband and started a new life; however, her crazed and abusive husband found her. This episode brought to life the severity of this issue. In season 17, police brutality and racial profiling take center stage. Dr. Miranda Bailey and her husband instruct their son what to do if a police officer ever stops him when he is only a young teenager. But, as Miranda and her husband point out, this is the world we live in and he needs to know how to keep himself safe. This show brings so many issues in the world to the forefront of media for all viewers to see. Grey’s Anatomy not only spreads awareness for these issues, but makes people aware of them so that they can work to put them to rest.

Grey’s Anatomy is a fantastic romantic medical drama. If you are weary of blood and needles, like myself, do not fret for this show is not overly gory. Also, the different medical terms that get thrown around in the hospital sound foreign at first. But, by the end of season 1, you should be a pro and understand different procedures and what exactly is happening. Ultimately, I can say that Grey’s Anatomy has become my go-to comfort show. Despite the floodgates opening every time a character dies, I enjoy everything about this show. It is funny, dramatic, intense, emotional, and involves problems people face in the real world. So, if this sounds like something up your alley, I would highly recommend you take the time to watch all 18 seasons, especially before the release of season 19 and you have to catch up on even more.
