“Law School?” “Yes Daddy!” “Why? Law School is for boring, ugly, serious people. And you, button, are none of those things.” That remark sounds harsh coming from anyone, but coming from your dad, that, or the fact that your ex-boyfriend who you are still madly in love with is going, might just be enough to push you to go to Harvard Law. What musical is this you may be asking? Well, it is none other than Legally Blonde! Now that you know what this post will be about, let’s dive into this all-around amazing musical!

Legally Blonde is a musical adaption from the original movie with Reese Witherspoon playing the leading lady Elle Woods. The musical follows Elle Woods who is a graduating senior at UCLA who is set on marrying her college sweetheart, Warner. When Warner ends their relationship, he tells Elle it is because she “isn’t serious enough to marry someone who is going to be a Law Student at Harvard Law in the fall.” Well, this inspires Elle to prove him wrong and win back her man by following him to Harvard. Though this may sound like a bad plan, Elle gets accepted to Harvard, and works to prove to everyone that she deserves to be there and that she isn’t just a pretty, dumb blonde. The end of the show culminates with Elle finding a new love of her life, Emmett, who likes her for her, a new best friend, Paulette, and successfully defending a client in a murder case. Now that we have a quick run-down of the show, it’s time to                         Photo Source                      hear my specific reasons for watching the show.

  1. The Overall Message of Female Empowerment in the Face of Misogyny

The central message of Legally Blonde is that a girl cannot let a man’s view of her define her worth. Throughout the entire show, Elle is told by many people that she is not serious enough and will just be another pretty blonde woman getting through life on her looks. She is told this from her father, her ex-boyfriend, and even her professor at Harvard Law. Elle only finds her self-worth when she meets Emmett who teaches her how to love herself for who she is and that she can be anything she wants to be in life. Elle then rallies with an army of women supporting her and Emmett and proves to the world that she is not just a pretty, dumb blonde girl, but a smart, powerful, and strong woman. This overall message alone is enough of a reason for people to watch the show.

  1. The Musical Score

The musical score of Legally Blonde is unmatched in my opinion. The songs are so fun and upbeat and really drive the plot of the show. The music helps to tell the story so perfectly and the orchestra adds important elements to the show that reveal so much that cannot be achieved with words. You have powerful and moving ballads, high-energy ensemble numbers, and even a few intended to make people laugh like “Bend and Snap” and “There! Right There!” Some of my favorite songs from the show include:

  1. The Talent of the Actors

The talent of the actors and actresses in this show is unrivaled. The amount of stamina and vocal support an actress needs to play Elle Woods alone is insane. But then add the character Brooke Wyndham who sings an entire intense and hard-hitting song “Whipped into Shape” while JUMPROPING. Let me say that again. Whoever plays Brooke Wyndham sings an entire song while JUMPROPING. That takes serious talent to pull this off. And that is just for singing alone. Then you add in all the fast choreography to go with the fast and upbeat songs that everyone does, and you have a recipe for a show that blows audiences away.

My Take: Legally Blonde is a very impactful musical that leaves viewers in awe. It truly is a feel-good musical that ends on such a high note – quite literally! I would absolutely see this musical again and again, and I can’t wait to go home in April to see my high school produce this show and see my girlfriend play Elle!
