As part of my “This I Believe” project, I discussed my experience working as a mentor for an after-school program at an elementary school. While reflecting on my memories, I realized how much of an impact this experience had on me. Although I have always enjoyed working with children, it was the kids from this particular school who left a lasting impression on me. I knew I had to share our story. While my initial draft only provided a superficial overview of our experience, I was able to delve deeper and create a more in-depth narrative for my final draft, which better characterized both myself and the young girl I worked with.

Thank you for sharing your story. Matilda sounds amazing, and I am so happy you have her in your life. It’s always important to surround ourselves with people who help us become the best versions of ourselves, and it seems as though you found just the person. I also believe that people change people.

Your friend from RIT seems really cool, and I am glad you guys were able to click so easily. Friends like that are my favorite. Finding good friends can be hard and can take time, but it’s always important to stay true to yourself in the process. I also agree with you that the times when I am most happy are when I’m being weird with my friends too. Thank you for sharing your story.
I’m so happy that you found someone who you truly click with, because it’s so important to at least have one best friend. For me, if I didn’t have my best friend, I don’t know where I’d be right now! I also loved how clear your voice was and the tone of your voice was perfect. Finding good friends is so so important, I’m happy for you!:)
Hi Carmen! Your speech was awesome! I’ve worked with younger kids for years and I very much relate to having to deal with their attitudes and snark. As a kid who was very similar to Izzy, I would’ve loved to have a mentor like you to believe in me. I think girls tend to get overlooked in school, and they need to have role models and people who push them to be better. Your speech was awesome!
