Saving our Home

A single can of dissolvent pollutes millions of liters of water. The water we wash the dishes with. The water we bathe in. The water we drink. Imagine it all polluted.

Water pollution often goes unnoticed, yet it is a very real and prevalent issue in the world today. Meanwhile, this civic artifact aims to bring awareness to this environmental struggle we are currently facing while drawing upon our desire to conserve the wilderness. By putting into use the commonplace of the wilderness, the photograph evokes a sense of preservation. Moreover, by analyzing this photograph more closely, I will pull apart its true identity and meaning. In addition, I will investigate the lack of representation that corresponds to this commonplace and demonstrate how we fail to allot enough attention to certain communities and areas of our planet. Through this analysis, I will ultimately encourage people to be more aware of their actions and describe how they can and will impact our environment.

There is still time for us to come together for the betterment of our planet  However, it’s time we make a change. And it’s time we make a change now.

  1. I like your description of how you would break down this image in the context of a rhetorical situation. I’m not sure what dissolvent is (I’m guessing it’s a pollutant that is dissolved in water) so I think it would be helpful to provide a description for listeners who might not have as much knowledge on the topic as you. I enjoyed your introduction and conclusions because of how direct they are and how much they relate so strongly to the ominous nature of the image.

  2. You provide a strong introduction to your pitch by using vivid description, provoking your audience to think about the effects pollutants have on our daily lives. I think you did well elaborating on the commonplace present within the artifact, but to increase the impact of your pitch I would suggest further analysis through an additional lens to develop your speech further. I enjoyed your conclusion as it addresses the sense of urgency we must act with in order to combat against these environmental issues.

  3. That fact at the beginning is shocking and serves as a good attention grabber. It shows how extreme this situation has become. You have a lot of good points and have chosen a good artifact. It may be helpful though to add another lens or two to get even more information. For example, you could use the meta-competency of temporal thinking. Since we only have so much time before we pass the point of no return.

  4. This is a great analysis! I think the artifact you chose is very impactful and important. I think one of the biggest problems facing not only the United States, but the whole world is pollution and its effects. The connection to water’s role in our lives is also very well done.

  5. Class presentation comment:
Excellent opening with the common topic of weather, especially summer! Your arrangement is clear as it gets deeper with the analysis, but I hope some transition sentences will be in place to make it more natural. The analysis of the uses of lenses is great, however, you may want to consider including more content and aspects in your formal speech. The delivery is smooth, but getting more familiar with the content away from notes might be even better! Nice work!

  6. Class Presentation:
Your discussion of the commonplaces and systems demonstrated by the poster clearly shows your knowledge of the topic, and your delivery with little reliance on your notes strengthened my personal connection to your topic. Nice work.

  7. Sorry for posting the wrong comment!

    Class presentation comment:
I love your opening with the example of our common water use! Your delivery is very natural and conversational. Your hand gestures are helpful in guiding the audience to understand the civic artifact. The arrangement is clear, but I hope that you can add more content to the analysis of the use of lenses in the formal speech. Again, love your delivery style so much, being natural makes the audience much easier to follow the content.

  8. Class presentation:
I like how you related it to us and our lives. You also included information about how other people don’t have the priviledges that we have. I can’y wait until you go more in depth about this topic because of how big this issue is.
