General Ideas

My primary goal for this blog is to teach not only my peers, but myself about foreign cultures. I want to include a variety of topics that are viewed as being cultural. For example, highlighting a popular Asian cuisine, a traditional African dance, or exploring German arts and crafts. I will research a country at random, provide some general background information, and then dive into the “fun facts” or interesting cultural artifact I discovered. If possible, I will try to include some sort of a comparison to other cultures to showcase differences or similarities. I will also include a map of where the country is in the world, along with a heading/title written in the language of the country, just for fun!

List of possible countries:

  • Korea
  • India
  • Australia
  • Norway
  • Ukraine
  • Brazil
  • Argentina
  • Yemen
  • Egypt

List of possible topics:

  • food
  • clothing
  • technology
  • ceremony
  • holidays
  • language
  • mannerisms
  • honorifics (if they have them or not)
  • masculine/feminine/neutral culture or language
  • family
  • religion

Other possible idea:

I know that I want to write this blog on something dealing with culture. Because I am interested in both foreign nations and literary works, I was considering researching famous poets from around the world. I could either choose to research the poet and his/her life alone, or analyze one of their most famous pieces. If anything, I would probably include biographical information in addition to a famous poem just to provide better context.

  1. I think choosing a different nation each week could be interesting, especially if you talked about famous literary works (such as greek epics for Greece, Romance of the Three Kingdoms for China) and compare their effects on their respective countries

  2. I love the idea of writing about interesting cultural artifacts/ fun facts! I think it’s so neat how we all live on the same planet, yet there are so many differences and unique aspects about the different places we live.
