Sarah McLachlan: Tear jerking commercials with the ASPCA

When you turn on the television and you start to hear the tune of, “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. It is difficult not to turn away or change the channel because of the heartfelt and distraught images of sad puppies. The famous singer lent her voice to the American Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for their Public Service Announcement commercials. This led to McLachlan becoming world-wide known as an advocate for the ASPCA while demonstrating phenomenal PR for the singer.

McLachlan’s song became a staple for the ASPCA and these ads have generated more than $30 million dollars for the animals. The target market of these PSA’s are nurturing mothers and animal lovers around the world. The core values and mission of the ASPCA is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” McLachlan has made it clear through her music and her actions that these animals are near and dear to her heart.

When this PSA went viral, ASPCA’s fundraising efforts more than doubled. The commercial opened viewers eyes to the importance of animal care, creating a larger fan base for not only the singer, but ASPCA as well. Overall, McLachlan not only generated more than $30,000 for the non-profit organization, she also created a name for herself as being kind-hearted, loving and an advocate for animals. This goes to show how powerful PR can be and how powerful celebrities can be to an organization in fundraising efforts.
