So it seems that I left you all on a bit of a cliffhanger last week! I just detailed our team’s epic come-back win over Lindenwood University in the quarterfinals of the CHA playoffs. We barely had anytime to refocus, since we were slated to play the #1 seed Robert Morris just 13 hours after battling it out vs. Lindenwood.
After a lot of fueling, stretching, and sleeping, our team gathered right before the game to go over last minute preparations to take down the Colonials. We were ready, but so was Robert Morris. Our opponents had even brought their pep band to make it feel more like their home rink. It sounds cheesy, but their strategy that seemed to work. We didn’t have to wait long to hear the RMU fight song, as the colonials scored just minutes into the game off of a rebound in front. After playing an intense game the night before, it was clear that our team was tired and playing sluggishly, something that RMU capitalized on. After the first period the score was 3-1, and we knew we needed to come up with a new game plan quickly to try to come back.
Despite our best efforts to dig deep and battle, RMU had just too much offense to handle. After they scored their fourth goal, our goaltender, was replaced. Hannah was doing the best that she could, but in the previous game she had hurt her hip and was in pain while playing. So our freshman back-up, Chantal, was sent in to try to right the sinking ship. In a crazy turn of events, just 2 1/2 minutes later Chantal fell awkwardly to the ice and ended up severely spraining her ankle. So our senior goalie has a pulled groin, our sophomore goalie has been out for three weeks with a concussion and still isn’t cleared, and now our freshman goalie has gone down with an ankle injury. Speaking as someone who is pretty knowledgable about the goaltender position, let me tell you that this. Was. Pure. Insanity!
Everyone on our team kind of looked around blankly for a couple seconds not knowing what to do with all thee goalies injured. I even had a couple of parents come up to me in the stands where I was doing my usual game-day job of filming and ask me if I was going to go in and play. (If I played in the game I would violate my redshirt year, meaning that I wouldn’t have four eligible years after this one of not playing, which would have been a bad idea.) Eventually, Hannah went back into the game despite her injury, and at this point our team was just trying to finish the game with a little bit of dignity.
The game ended in a 7-2 loss, which was definitely not the way we wanted to end our season. However, there were a lot of positives to take away from this season as a whole. As a team we have really enjoyed working with the new coaching staff, and are looking forward to working toward the expectations that they have set for our program. Also, our freshman class had a really strong rookie year, combining for almost half of our goals scored this year. Although it is sad to see our four seniors leave, the future of Penn State Women’s ice hockey looks bright, and we are already itching for next year’s season to begin!
