Activism & Seeking Equality: Physical Accessibility on Campus (1970-1989)

  • “Handicapped Students find problems, progress,” The Daily Collegian, April 5, 1979

The physical living and learning environment, then and now, remain critical to integration and success at Penn State. Students and allies were instrumental in highlighting the variety of barriers for the Penn State community through various awareness events and evaluation projects. The evolution of the campus landscape and language to promote accessibility is evident between the “A Map for the Disabled” in 1978 and the 1981 “Access to Penn State: A Guide to Barrier Free Mobility.”
