Alison Gernand is an Assistant Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Penn State University. She received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas School of Public Health and a PhD in human nutrition and international health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is also a Registered Dietitian with extensive experience in public health nutrition. She is a member of the Center for Reproductive Biology and Health and the Center for Women’s Health Research at Penn State.
The focus of her research is the impact of maternal micronutrient status on adverse pregnancy outcomes. In particular, she studies the effect of vitamins and minerals on placental growth and development. Dr. Gernand uses both human studies and animal models to investigate these relationships. With the largest burden of micronutrient deficiencies in low-income countries, she currently works in Bangladesh and Ghana.
