Shelba Purtle and her Handpans (Hang instrument)
The handpan is a unique musical instrument that looks like a small space ship and sounds beautiful with a rich resonance of tone like a percussive harp or piano. Microphones and amplifiers do not faithfully convey this resonance as the sound travels outward from the instrument naturally. Playing a handpan is like a dance played with your fingers on tempered steel. It is not the musical norm, but it is truly enticing!
This music class will allow each person to experience the handpans themselves, along with playing music in a group with other small instruments such as a shruti (a bellows instrument for an acoustic drone), a tambourine, and various shakers!
